Tonight, during the second debate featuring Republican presidential nominee, moderator Brit Hume posed a question to the ten candidates about a hypothetical terrorist attack on our soil:
Two major shopping malls have been hit, with a third hit heavily rumored. The terrorists responsible have been apprehended at Gitmo for questioning: and they have the specifics on the next attack. With the clock ticking on American lives, how far would you go to the information if you were president?
Enter Sen. John McCain, (Vietnam war veteran and torture survivor)
who always seems like he's on the verge of losing his stability.
McCain believes that one of the main motivations behind the U.S. refraining from torture techniques should be a reflection of how WE would want the enemy to treat us.
But Sen. McCain: the enemy wants to kill us, decapitate our bodies, and spit on our graves.
They are married to the idea of our total destruction.
They are blinded by a hatred tempered with a perverted religious zeal.
How can you play political diplomat with madmen who will kill us no matter what we do (or DON'T do for that matter)?
We are not fighting a conventional war with another country where it is beneficial to observe the rules of engagement.
So I'm not sure the whole "treat others like we would want them to treat us as hostages" principle is really applicable here.
